“That’s more than me!” Cam said. And Cam wasn’t small.

Gabe jotted down some equations on a piece of paper. He slid them over to Abby, who glanced at them, nodded, and slid them back.

“A budgie weighs around an ounce,” Mrs. E. said, pointing to Mr. Mortimer Sunshine. “Pelagornis sandersi was over one thousand times heavier!”

“And a baseball is two and a half times heavier than a foam ball,” Gabe said.

The class was silent for a moment. No one knew what to say to that. So, Mrs. E. said, “That’s interesting, Gabe, but what does it have to do with birds?”

“Well, firstly, both fly,” Gabe said. “And I bet if a Pelagornis sandersi hit Cam while he was on the zip line, it would knock him off, too. A budgie? Probably not.”

“We didn’t do anything wrong!” the Pendertons cried.

“Not on purpose,” Gabe said. “But you made a mistake again, didn’t you?”

The Pendertons didn’t answer, but Mrs. E. did. “Let’s slow down with the accusations.”

“I’m not accusing them,” Gabe said. “I’m saving them.”

“Saving us?” Mason said.

Gabe nodded and said, “Yes, once again.” Then he held up his sheet of paper with the equations on it. “And here’s the proof. I weighed different balls in the equipment closet, and I compared the weights to what we found on the playground. I wrote some equations down. Can we project them on the whiteboard?”

“Will it stop all the squabbling?” Mrs. E. asked as she grabbed the paper.

“It will,” Gabe said. “Or at least I think it will. If you can't trust the math, then you can't trust anything in this world. And I feel bad for you.”

In a few moments, Gabe’s paper was projected on the board. It looked like this:
