âThatâs more than me!â Cam said. And Cam wasnât small.
Gabe jotted down some equations on a piece of paper. He slid them over to Abby, who glanced at them, nodded, and slid them back.
âA budgie weighs around an ounce,â Mrs. E. said, pointing to Mr. Mortimer Sunshine. âPelagornis sandersi was over one thousand times heavier!â
âAnd a baseball is two and a half times heavier than a foam ball,â Gabe said.
The class was silent for a moment. No one knew what to say to that. So, Mrs. E. said, âThatâs interesting, Gabe, but what does it have to do with birds?â
âWell, firstly, both fly,â Gabe said. âAnd I bet if a Pelagornis sandersi hit Cam while he was on the zip line, it would knock him off, too. A budgie? Probably not.â
âWe didnât do anything wrong!â the Pendertons cried.
âNot on purpose,â Gabe said. âBut you made a mistake again, didnât you?â

I weighed different balls in the equipment closet, and I compared the weights to what we found on the playground. I wrote some equations down. Can we project them on the whiteboard?â
âWill it stop all the squabbling?â Mrs. E. asked as she grabbed the paper.
âIt will,â Gabe said. âOr at least I think it will. If you can't trust the math, then you can't trust anything in this world. And I feel bad for you.â
In a few moments, Gabeâs paper was projected on the board. It looked like this:
